Norman Mailer, MoonFire: The Epic Journey of Apollo 11
POST A COMMENT
"And the Moon came nearer..." The Epic Journey of Apollo 11
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing, TASCHEN has paired Norman Mailer’s seminal text with spectacular photography—from the archives of NASA, LIFE magazine, and many other sources—to create a unique tribute to the defining scientific mission of our time.
It has been called the single most historic event of the 20th century: On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins met John F. Kennedy's call for a manned Moon landing by the end of the 1960s. A decade of tests and training, a staff of 400,000 engineers and scientists, a budget of $24 billion, and the most powerful rocket ever launched all combined in an unprecedented event watched by millions the world over. And no one captured the men, the mood, and the machinery like Norman Mailer.
One of the greatest writers of the 20th Century, Norman Mailer was hired by LIFE in 1969 to cover the Moon shot. His three-part feature was the longest nonfiction piece LIFE had published. He enhanced and extended his reportage with deeper reflection in the brilliantly crafted book, Of a Fire on the Moon, excerpted here for the first time. Equally adept at examining the science of space travel and the psychology of the men involved—from Saturn V rocket engineer Wernher von Braun, to the crucial NASA support staff, to the three astronauts—Mailer provides provocative and trenchant insights into this epoch-making event.
Illustrating this volume are hundreds of the best photographs and maps from the NASA vaults, magazine archives, and private collections. Many of them previously unpublished, these images document the development of the agency and the mission, life inside the command module and on the Moon’s surface, and the world’s jubilant reaction to the landing. This edition includes an original introduction by Colum McCann and captions by leading Apollo 11 experts, explaining the history and science behind the images, citing the mission log and publications of the day, and post-flight astronaut interviews.

American Fashion Accessories
POST A COMMENT
Starting in the twentieth century, the American accessory designer looked to Europe and then said, "I can do better." In a book commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and edited by Candy Pratts Price, with writing by Jessica Glasscock and Art Tavee, their achievements are revealed: a century of objects of necessity and desire poured forth to boutiques and department stores across the United States and the world. The forward-thinking American accessory designer, in collusion with America's royalty–the Hollywood star–and in sync with the unstoppable dominance of a rebellious popular culture, has assembled a cabinet of curiosities, including everything from Adrian's witty Hollywood hats to Ralph Lauren's all-American accoutrement to Madonna's rubber bracelets. It is a tradition that continues today with a stellar group of CFDA designers whose work exemplifies the American accessory. There is no lack of books about Venice. This one is not another guide, but rather a personal and very lively inside view of a bon vivant, art historian, author, musician, and world traveler. Alexis Gregory first went to Venice nearly 50 years ago, and has been back every year since to enjoy both the high society and the great richness of art and architecture. He evokes the great palaces of Venice; legendary personalities he knew well like Peggy Guggenheim, Lily Volpi and Arrigo Cipriani; and great Venetian figures of the past such as the mad Marchesa Casati, the Sapphic muse Princess Winnaretta de Polignac, and the spoiled Charles de Besteigui.

POST A COMMENT
A stunning achievement in botanical illustration
The complete reprint of all color plates from Robert John Thornton's monumental work The Temple of Flora, first published in London in 1799. Presented as 33 loose-leaf Elephant folio-sized color prints as well as a booklet including an introduction and explanations of the 31 botanical plates
The year 1799 witnessed the first installment of a work that has gone down in history as one of the most remarkable books of botanical plates ever published. Two centuries have passed since the publication of Robert John Thornton's The Temple of Flora, but its charm remains unsullied. Although trained as a medical doctor, Thornton (c. 1768–1837) passionately devoted himself to botany. Only a few decades earlier, Carl Linnaeus had established his revolutionary new system of classification, which today continues to form the backbone of such natural sciences as botany and zoology. Thornton greatly honored the ingenious Swedish scientist and wished his own prodigious undertaking to serve as an ultimate monument to the great botanist.
Today, Thornton's large-format plates with their stunning floral portraits number among supreme achievements of botanical illustration. Thornton engaged the most renowned flower painters of his age and spared no cost in the creation of this unique work. His reckless enthusiasm, however, reduced his originally considerable fortune so drastically that, sanctioned by Parliament, Thornton had to organize a botanical lottery in order to bring his spectacular project to a provisional end. Surviving complete editions of the Temple number today among the great treasures of only a few libraries; meanwhile, the individual plates have become sought-after and extremely expensive collectors' items, whose particular allure lies in their unusual combination of monumental, at times exotic plants with highly romantic background landscapes. More than any other floral painting, the bewitchingly illuminated blossoms of the Night-Blooming Cereus, posed before darkening ruins, expresses the late 18th-century sentiment that in the following decades found its characteristic expression in European Romantic literature and painting.
Including all the plates of the Temple of Flora as loose-leaf color prints, this large-format edition represents a consummate reprint of the work. In addition to the botanical and cultural historical explanations of the individual plate illustrations, the volume narrates the history of the origin of the work and the life of its author. This resplendent reprint has been made from one of the finest complete original copies, belonging to the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.
TASCHEN’s Temple of Flora consists of the following, packaged in a presentation case:- a 44-page booklet including author Werner Dressendörfer’s introduction as well as the texts of the 31 botanical plates
- 33 loose-leaf Elephant folio-sized color prints for browsing or framing

One of the first American designers to mix graffiti and a punk aesthetic with fashion, Stephen Sprouse manipulated conventional notions of style, and his unique sensibility has inspired designers from John Galliano to Raf Simmons to Marc Jacobs. Sprouse’s career started in the late seventies, when, after working for Halston, he migrated to a warehouse on the Bowery and started making outfits for his neighbor, Debbie Harry. The fashion world quickly embraced his innovative, culturally relevant sensibility and downtown edge. But Sprouse’s inability to compromise his artistic vision for the rigid fashion business compromised his commercial success. The Padilhas possess the largest private collection of Sprouse’s work, and were given exclusive access to his archives by his family for this project. They also obtained never-before-published images from photographers such as Steven Meisel, Bob Gruen, and Mert and Marcus. The book features a foreword by the novelist Tama Janowitz, one of Sprouse’s closest friends. The release of this book coincides with a retrospective at Deitch Projects. The book will be available with four different jackets, each featuring a different Day-Glo color, an homage to Sprouse’s iconic album cover for Debbie Harry’s Rockbird.Labels: Amazon, Books, The Stephen Sprouse Book

Guts and Glory: The Golden Age of American Football, 1958-1978
POST A COMMENT
No pain, no gain
The most memorable moments since the birth of pro football in America
The best of sports photographer Neil Leifer's 10,000 rolls of football pictures, including hundreds of previously unpublished images. Presented in a custom slipcase and limited to a total of 1,500 copies signed by the photographer, this XL edition is a companion to Neil Leifer’s instant sell-out success, Ballet in the Dirt: The Golden Age of Baseball, published by TASCHEN in 2007.
In 1958, sports photographer Neil Leifer took the picture that remains one of his most famous to this day. The day he got the shot - Alan Ameche’s game-winning "Sudden Death" touchdown - was Leifer’s 16th birthday. This game, called "The Greatest Ever Played," signaled football’s emergence as America’s new national pastime; formerly half-empty stadiums welcomed sold-out crowds seemingly overnight, while football surpassed pro baseball and college football in national television ratings. Starting then, on any given Sunday Leifer was most likely shooting a football game somewhere in America. His 1961 photo of legendary Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle dropping back to pass landed Leifer his first cover for Sports Illustrated and cemented his close connection to the sport.
While best known for his iconic photograph of Muhammad Ali towering over a fallen Sonny Liston, and for the enormous diversity of subjects he covered in and out of the sports world, it is his football pictures Leifer considers his best. This collection represents the best of his best, culled from over 10,000 rolls of film on the sport, including hundreds of previously unpublished pictures. It’s impossible to conceive of Peyton Manning hovering over an impromptu wood fire on the sidelines during a blizzard, but Leifer captured Tittle’s Giants doing exactly that during the coldest game in his living memory (the 1962 Championship in New York, a game "far colder than the famous Ice Bowl"). From Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers dynasty to the Miami Dolphins’ perfect season in 1972 to the Minnesota Vikings’ terrifying Front Four - the "Purple People Eaters" - they’re all here.
Following an introduction assembled from the best football columns of the era by famed sports columnist Jim Murray, this collection is divided into four chapters: "On Any Sunday" is Leifer’s homage to the game."The Legends" includes heroes like Johnny Unitas, Jim Brown, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Dick Butkus, Frank Gifford, and "Mean" Joe Greene. "The Bosses" delves into the victories on and off the field of immortal coaches Vince Lombardi, John Madden, Tom Landry, Weeb Ewbank, and others. Finally,"The Big Game" traces major championship games from 1958 through Super Bowl XII. The indepth captions put the images into their historical context, making the book highly accessible and informative.

The 2008 Pritzker Prize winner explores his career to date
The work of France's most unique and internationally celebrated contemporary architect in a book designed by the master himself. Limited to 1,000 signed and numbered copies packaged in a translucent plexiglass slipcase reminiscent of the translucent facades often seen in Jean Nouvel designs.
Recipient of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, Jean Nouvel is without any doubt France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970, he was an assistant of the influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, then creating his own office in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87, with Architecture Studio). Since then he has completed the Lyon Opera House (1986–93), the Euralille Shopping Center, Lille (1991–94), and the Fondation Cartier, Paris (1991–94). His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland (1998–2000), the spectacular Agbar Tower on Barcelona’s Diagonal Avenue (2001–03), the extension of the Reina Sofia Museum, (Madrid, 1999–2005), the Quai Branly Museum on the Seine in Paris (2001–06), and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Apart from receiving this year’s Pritzker Prize, Jean Nouvel won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medal in 2001.
Jean Nouvel worked for five years with author Philip Jodidio on this prodigiously illustrated TASCHEN monograph, a book that will finally give the full measure of the architect’s talent. Two 400-page hardcover volumes give the most complete overview to date of Jean Nouvel’s career, including works in progress, such as the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the extension of the MoMA in New York. The book’s graphic design and images were conceived and selected by the architect; in addition, the transparent printed dust jackets mimic the architect’s own tendency to play with contrasts and overlaid patterns. One can truly say that this publication is Nouvel by Nouvel, inside and out.Labels: Books, Jean Nouvel by Jean Nouvel., taschen

The Ingmar Bergman Archives
POST A COMMENT
An in-depth exploration of Bergman’s complete works
The complete works of Ingmar Bergman: an homage to one of the most esteemed film and theater artists of all time, began in cooperation with Bergman himself and made with full access to his archives
Since 1957, when he released The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, Ingmar Bergman has been one of the leading figures in international cinema. In a career that spanned 60 years, he wrote, produced, and directed 50 films that defined how we see ourselves and how we interact with the people we love, in films like Persona, Scenes from a Marriage, and Fanny and Alexander.
Before his death in 2007, Bergman gave TASCHEN and the Swedish publishing house Max Ström complete access to his archives at The Bergman Foundation, and permission to reprint his writings and interviews, many of which have never been seen outside of Sweden. Picture researcher Bengt Wanselius, who was Bergman’s photographer for 20 years, scoured photo archives all over Sweden, discovered previously unseen images from Bergman’s films, and selected unpublished images from the personal archives of many photographers. Text editor Paul Duncan gathered a team of Bergman experts as contributing editors—Peter Cowie and Bengt Forslund (for film/TV), and Ulla Åberg & Birgitta Steene (for theater)—who have researched and written a narrative that, for the first time, will combine all of Bergman’s working life in film and theater. Such is the depth of Bergman’s writings that most of the story is told in his own words. This book also features a new introduction by Bergman’s close friend, actor and collaborator Erland Josephson, as well as a DVD full of rare and previously unseen material, and an original film strip from Fanny and Alexander.
The publishers have been given complete access to the files and archives of the Swedish Film Institute, Svensk Filmindustri, Sveriges Television, and the Royal Dramatic Theater, as well as many other institutions, publishers, and newspapers, making this not only the most complete book ever published on Ingmar Bergman, but also about an individual director.Labels: Books, taschen, The Ingmar Bergman Archives

Geoffrey Beene
POST A COMMENT
Geoffrey Beene was fiercely independent, radical, subversive, and loved by ladies who lunched and underground scenesters alike. As an adventurous artist and an experimental designer, Mr. Beene (as his friends called him) helped define modern American fashion in the latter twentieth century. His designs explored the shapes and contortions of the human body using seams, geometry, and even hardware to define and insinuate the shape and scope of nature’s most proud creation. From his infamous zipper dress to the jumpsuit and bolero to his witty design details, bold prints, and contrasts, Mr. Beene’s influence rocked a new generation of designers and the closets of women across the world. Close friend and cultural maverick Kim Hastreiter recounts the life and work of a passionate artist who was as freethinking, original, and antiestablishment as they come.Labels: Assouline, Books, Geoffrey Beene

This trend was most notably embodied in the famous Case Study House Program, which was championed by the era’s leading American journal, Arts & Architecture. Focusing not only on architecture but also design, art, music, politics, and social issues, A&A was an ambitious and groundbreaking publication, largely thanks to the inspiration of John Entenza, who ran the magazine for over two decades until David Travers became publisher in 1962. The era’s greatest architects were featured in A&A, including Neutra, Schindler, Saarinen, Ellwood, Lautner, Eames, and Koenig; and two of today’s most wildly successful architects, Frank Gehry and Richard Meier, had their debuts in its pages. A&A was instrumental in putting American architecture—and in particular California Modernism—on the map. Other key contributors to the magazine include photographers Julius Shulman and Ezra Stoller, writers Esther McCoy and Peter Yates, and cover designers Herbert Matter and Alvin Lustig, among many luminaries of modernism.
This collection comes with ten boxes, each containing a complete year’s worth of Arts & Architecture magazines from 1945–1954. That’s 6,076 pages in 118 issues reproduced in their entirety—beginning with Entenza’s January 1945 announcement of the Case Study House Program. Also included is a supplement booklet with an original essay by former A&A publisher David Travers, available in English, German, French, and Spanish. Arts & Architecture 1945–54 will be followed in autumn 2009 by a second set, 1955–1967, bringing together all the existing issues of the modern era.
This new TASCHEN publication, limited to 5,000 numbered copies, provides a comprehensive record of mid-century American architecture and brings the legendary Arts & Architecture back to life after forty years.Labels: 1945-54, Arts Architecture, Books

HIGH SOCIETY, THE HISTORY OF AMERICA'S UPPER CLASS
POST A COMMENT
With insight and nostalgia, High Society explores the intrigue of New York’s upper-class society and culture. From Greenwich Village and the Sugar House to Stone Street, author Nick Foulkes unravels Manhattan’s past, starting in the early seventeenth century and leading up to the prosperous present. With stories of the residents that have made and make up Manhattan’s lavish citizenry—the Vanderbilt, Frick, Morgan, and Astor families—and the restaurants, playhouses, galleries, and night clubs where they socialized—Le Grenouille, El Morocco, and Le Cirque—the narrative weaves the political, social, and literary moments of the eras, delivering a spectacle of culture beside a poignant selection of photography.Labels: Books, HIGH SOCIETY

VIENNA 1900
POST A COMMENT
Fifty or so artists with a different sensibility and a common determination: to be free of the bourgeois morality and its obsolete traditions. To break with the classicism of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on its decline. The Vienna Secession, founded in 1897, would shape a distinctive form of art in Vienna and all over the world. Gustav Klimt paints his own dreams; poet Hugo Hofmannsthal pens librettos for composer Richard Strauss; Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffman invent design; compatriot Sigmund Freud studies the interpretation of dreams; the young Egon Schiele studies painting and drawing. It’s from this atmosphere of artistic, intellectual, and political effervescence that a world is born, notably through the search of a global art which evokes more particularly this wander through the Vienna of 1900.Labels: Books, VIENNA 1900

Thanks to this journal, we are able to enter for the first time the day to day life of the most important artist of the 20th century. Picasso’s way of living, working, his friends and habits - the text brings to life the energy, generosity, and true originality of the Great Master. Originally published in 1983, The Curse of Lono features zany, hallucinogenic wordplay and feral artwork for which the Hunter S. Thompson/Ralph Steadman duo became known and loved. Araki
POST A COMMENT
Araki, is an enormous and unique book with a print run of only 2,500 copies. The subject is Japanese photographer Araki, a man who talks about life through photographs. His powerful oeuvre, decades' worth of images, has been pared down to about 1,000 photographs which tell the story of Araki and comprise the ultimate retrospective collection of his work.
Known best for his intimate, snapshot-style images of women often tied up with ropes (kinbaku, Japanese rope-tying art) and of colorful, sensual flowers, Araki is an artist who reacts strongly to his emotions and uses photography to experience them more fully. Obsessed with women, Araki seeks to come closer to them through photography, using ropes like an embrace and the click of the shutter like a kiss. His work is at once shocking and mysteriously tender; a deeply personal artist, Araki is not afraid of his emotions nor of showing them to the world.

It all started with one of the greatest watchmakers of the eighteenth century. Today, with more than a dozen different models issued in limited editions, Jaquet Droz mostly captivates collectors in search of unique timepieces.
